Invisible Disabilities Week Lightings in the News

Invisible Disabilities Week Lightings in the News

This Invisible Disabilities Week, I had 16 locations in 10 cities across Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia light up to bring awareness to invisible disabilities, and it was so exciting to see local news outlets cover them! Here's a roundup of the articles.

Peace Bridge, Fort Erie Radio (October 18)

Exciting to see this article on the Fort Erie Radio website about the Peace Bridge and Niagara region sign lighting up for Invisible Disabilities Week!

The Peace Bridge is the only one of the 16 landmarks across Canada that's visible from two countries - which I didn't even think of before reading this. But I love that people living in both the US and Canada can potentially learn more about IDW!

Peace Bridge and Niagara Region sign, Niagara This Week (October 18)

So happy to see this article on Niagara This Week about the Peace Bridge and Niagara Region sign lighting up for Invisible Disabilities Week!

27% of Canadians 15 and over live with at least one disability, according to a 2022 survey by Statistics Canada. Up to 80% of disabilities are non-apparent, so the invisible disability community is bigger than I'm sure a lot of people realize!

Oakville Town Hall, Oakville News (October 19)

Love seeing this Oakville News article about Oakville Town Hall lighting up for Invisible Disabilities Week!

Every once in awhile during the lighting campaigns I've done for Invisible Disabilities Week or Rare Disease Day (in February), I'll get an email from someone who wanted to let me know that they learned about these awareness days because of reading an article like this one.

Peterborough City Hall, PTBO Today (October 21)

So cool seeing this PTBO Today article about Peterborough City Hall lighting up for Invisible Disabilities Week!

Peterborough is the last lighting in my campaign for Invisible Disabilities Week, across 16 locations in 10 cities in Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia. I've already gotten suggestions to light up locations in other provinces too, so I'm hoping next year to have a lighting in every province!

Because if someone who's part of the invisible disability community can learn through an article like these that there IS a community around their situation, I know from experience what a difference it can make. Yay! ✨
